Turtles, they give us life. Look after them. – 2022

Paintings – Acrylic on Canvas – 40 x 40 cm (pre-stretched)

I painted the turtle to remind people of how important turtles are to us Aboriginal people.  For a long time Yanyuwa and Marra people have been hunting turtles to feed our families. The cross on the back of the shell represents the four clan groups in the southwest of Gulf of Carpentaria region. The circle represents all four clan groups having a connection with turtles.

Through our Law and culture, we share in the turtle meat at ceremony times. The circle around the whole thing represents how we are all worried about how mines, port developments, prawn boats, set-nets and people’s rubbish are hammering the turtles. They are slowing losing their habitat. People have to show more respect to the turtles, look after their habitat and breeding places cos they give life to our people.
