Our Country Gave us Everything we Needed to Make Tools. – 2020
Paintings – Acrylic on Canvas – 51 x 61 cm
This painting records tools and equipment used by Aboriginal people in the Gulf Region until approximately the 1960’s. The paintings shows us items such as stone axes, fishing lines with hand-woven string, fish hooks made from crocodile teeth and plant resin, carry bags from grass string, boomerangs carved coolamon and other useful implements.
Many of these items are still made today as a way of preserving culture and passing stories on from one generation to the next. As an oral culture, storytelling, artifact making and recording histories through artwork is front and centre in language and culture preservation.
