Fishing has always been a way of life for saltwater and mainland people around the Gulf Country.
First we used bark canoes, Pandanus nets, spears and hooks. After the Macassan’s started visiting our countries and trading with us, they taught us how to make stronger, better dugout canoes.
Fishing is still the most important Bush Food in our lands and we carry on teaching our young people the best way to hunt and catch both saltwater and fresh water fish and animals.
We use modern boats and steel hooks now, but we still have our own ways of tracking, baiting and preparing the fish for eating.
