Wild Bush Flowers After the Rain – 2022
Paintings – Acrylic on Canvas – 30 x 30 cm (pre-stretched)
“When the wet season comes my country changes from orange dust to every lovely colour with flowers and green plants. Some plants are good for eating, some for bush medicine and some for weaving.” – Senior tribeswoman, Dinah Norman. 2019. (‘the boss lady’)
Mainland and saltwater women love to record the changing seasons of their countries and the flowers that bloom, both in the water and on the land. Senior women who were born in the bush and raised in traditional camps, had a connection to the environment and it’s vital role in sustaining life. Flowers, plants, water holes, coral reefs – these are not just pretty pictures to tribeswomen, but the essence of life, sustenance and survival. The things that were part of everyday life to those that were raised in the bush are still a part of everyday life to young people – the teachings are passed from grandmother to mother to daughter, and culture is kept strong.
