Gum Nuts – Cultural Story – 2022
Acrylic on Canvas – 40 x 40 cm (pre-stretched)

Painted Gumnuts have been a significant part of culture and passing skills from Mother to Daughter among Garrwa, Gudanji and Yanyuwa women for a very long time. Coming together to gather gumnuts, clean, drill, meticulously paint and then thread them is not just a jewellery making exercise, but something much more meditative and connected to the passing of knowledge from one woman to another, from one generation to the next.

Painting on gumnuts and threading them is very symbolic, like threading or joining the dots across time. It is also about staying in tune with nature and the seasons – the right time to gather is very important and is connected (like may indigenous rituals) to life,  sustainability and cultural preservation.
