Hunting Sea Turtle (Walya Wundunyuka) in Yanyuwa and Marra Country – 2024
Acrylic on Canvas – 1220 x 910
Marra and Yanyuwa people have lived in this country for thousands of years. They are known as saltwater people and gather seafood as an important food source for their families.
In the old days spears and harpoons were the main hunting weapons, today hunting happens with nets and lines, but tracking the sea animals out in the ocean is still exactly the same as it has been since the old days.
Yanyuwa and Marra people still cook turtle and fish the same way as the old days – over an open fire outside in the evening or sometimes wrapped in paper bark and roasted over the hot coals.
