Wild Flowers Around the Billabongs and Water Holes – 2022
Acrylic on Canvas – 30 x 30 cm (pre-stretched)
Vivid wild flower paintings reflect a connection to country that goes back for many, many generations. These paintings are both a reflection of the artists own observation of the country around her, and also her learning as she listens to the stories of her elders.
During the wet season, the land changes from a dry and parched orange to vivid green, and comes alive with wild flowers. The women of both Yanyuwa and Garrwa clans consider these changes with great interest and await the changing seasons to gather bush foods and bush medicines.
Around the rivers, billabongs and waterholes grow a wide range of wild flowers which are still harvested today – some for edible fruit, some for bush medicine and some for their vivid dyes and essences.
