Fresh Water Turtles – 2022
Acrylic on Canvas – 40 x 40 cm (pre-stretched)
Fresh water turtles live in the creeks and water holes around the mainland of the Gulf Country. For all peoples (Yanyuwa, Marra, Garrwa, Gudanji) they are a totem for some individuals and the subject of many dreamings and stories.
Traditionally they are also a bush food, and are hunted for their meat which is cooked over an open fire. They are not eaten by those individuals who receive fresh water turtle as their totem.
Tribal names for the turtle are many – varying between all four language groups.
